In Ruby and Sapphire there are 43 different kinds of Berries. Some of them heal Sleep, Poison, etc., some restore HP/PP, all can be used to make Pokéblocks that improve your Pokémon's Coolness, Beauty, Toughness, Intelligence and Cuteness for Contests.
Move your mouse over the picture of the Berry to get a bit more info on it.
When you plant a berry it grows into a new berry tree with fruit you can pick. Growth shows the normal amount of time it takes for a berry to grow in hours, it can be speeded up by watering it with the Wailmer Pail.
